Here’s The story
My name is Asha - My parents moved to the UK from Mauritius in the 1970s. I was the first generation born in the UK, but I have always been deeply rooted to my Mauritian heritage. I married into an Indian family, with their background stemming from Kenya and India.
Mauritius has always been described as a 'melting pot' - a culturally diverse nation, with food influences from across the globe including India, China and Africa. Unless you have been to this tiny glorious island - the chances of experiencing its culinary delights are slim to none!
Likewise, if you have been lucky enough to visit Mauritius - the chances of enjoying its traditional moreish delights in the UK may also be unlikely (unfortunately). I want to bring the nostalgia back for people who know and love the food of Mauritius.
Following my award-winning wedding cake business, I was ready to pursue my next challenge, combining two of my favourite things; producing food that has been termed as 'banging' and feeding it to family and friends.
After years of struggling to find great consistent traditional Indian & Mauritian delicacies locally, I wanted to make this readily available in Kent and London.
Gajak was born on the 1st of January 2024 - I have curated a selection of the 'best' Indian & Mauritian-inspired street food using traditional recipes handed down by generations before.
Gajak (pronounced GAA-JACK), meaning 'snack' in Creole - the native language of Mauritius.
Authentic, traditional, and utterly delicious!
Gajak will travel the streets of Kent and London, and will also be available to cater for weddings, private parties, corporate events and kitchen takeovers.
